In this article, we'll explain everything you need to know about how to dilute a vial of botulinum toxin so you can safely and effectively administer this substance to your patients.
What is botulinum toxin?
Before going into the details of how to dilute a vial of botulinum toxin, it is important to understand what botulinum toxin is and how it works.
Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which is responsible for muscle paralysis. In small amounts, botulinum toxin can be used for therapeutic and aesthetic purposes, to reduce facial wrinkles and treat medical conditions such as strabismus and blepharospasm.
Why is it necessary to dilute botulinum toxin vial?
Botulinum toxin is supplied in vials with a predefined concentration, which is indicated on the package. However, to obtain the desired concentration for each application, it is necessary to dilute the vial with a sterile saline solution.
The ideal concentration for the application of botulinum toxin depends on the application site and the condition to be treated. Therefore, it is important that the professional performing the application knows how to dilute the bottle of botulinum toxin correctly, to avoid unwanted results and ensure patient safety.
How to Dilute Botulinum Toxin Bottle
Dilution of the bottle of botulinum toxin must be done according to the manufacturer's instructions and following good sterilization and hygiene practices. The basic procedure involves the following steps:
- Make sure your hands and work surface are clean and sterile.
- Remove the cap from the botulinum toxin vial and clean the top of the vial with alcohol.
- Using a sterile syringe, withdraw the desired amount of saline and inject it into the botulinum toxin vial.
- Gently swirl the vial to mix the saline solution with the botulinum toxin.
- Repeat the procedure until the desired concentration is obtained.
Toxin Dilution:
- With a 3-5 ml syringe and needle, insert sterile 0.9 saline solution for injection into the saline vial and aspirate 1-2ml of the serum depending on your dilution method and amount of toxin units in the vial.
- Insert the syringe with 2ml of serum. Slowly introduce the syringe with serum into the bottle of botulinum toxin if possible through the same hole made. Position the vial, at a 45° angle, and do not push the syringe plunger, so that the serum does not enter the vial abruptly, breaking the toxin. The vacuum will press on the plunger. Hold and let the serum slowly flow into the vial.
- The whey can be stored in a refrigerated environment in the fridge or cooler to keep it at a temperature below room temperature, which avoids heating during handling.
- Make a slight homogenization with light movements and let the flask rest for 5 minutes.
- We will then have in 1 ml of solution = 50 U of toxin, and in 2ml of solution = 100U of Toxin
